The year 1909 was coming to an end when the author of these simple and modest but truthful tales had not yet become 17. Full of faith, enthusiasm and optimism and in the company of a nephew who had come back from Europe some months before after abiding in the Old Continent for several years, abandoned the few comforts he could enjoy in order to launch into the conquest of the unknown Patagonia.
Patagonia, or the largest part of it, was uninhabited at that time, life was hard in those bleak regions but youth, decision and perseverance were enough weapons to overcome any difficulty that might arise, at the expense of great sacrifice and suffering. The life I intend to portray in these lines is truthful; it is the life that had to be faced to survive in those years of desolation in these immense territories...
