Estancia Los Granaderos
Los Granaderos is located in the ecological area called “Mediterranean Central Plateau” and is reached by means of:
The rubble roads are passable and signposted.
- Routes 25 and 77 from Puerto San Julián
- Route 12 (main route) from Gobernador Gregores
- Route 3 parallel to Tres Cerros and in the direction of Petrified Woods National Park along route 49
Entering along any of the roads, the visitor will encounter impressive attractions. The thin and stunted vegetation proves surprising for its capacity to live under such rigorous weather conditions. Plants of very diverse taxonomic position adopt compact and semicircular shapes, in shrubs, typical shapes of the Patagonian steppe.
For all stated before, cactaceae blossoming in big orange flowers and various types of yellow or even white-pink “daisies” are likely to be found. Bushes such as molle, lady’s thumb, carobs and calafates - the latter offering edible fruits - grow in the sheltered gorges.
Due to the fact that it is protected from possible harm as a consequence of the absence of stock farm for more than 15 years, the local fauna adopted non-evasive behaviour. Small guanaco herds consisting of a male exponent with its harem and their young can be spotted as well as some gullible grey foxes. Chingolos (Zonotrichia capensis), agachonas (Attagis) and comesebos (Phrygilus) are some of the most commonly seen bird species. Lizards of varied and mimetic colours are also frequent in the area.
The access road from the main route offers its allurements as well. Patagonian piche and choique or short ostrich can be watched. The latter is a bird of great size and brownish-grey plumage dotted with white, whose male are polygamous and build the nests, sit on the eggs and take care of the chicks, who may be more than twenty.

“And these lands might remember. Maybe the rocks and the Patagonian steppe still behold, as a vivid present, men forced to nervously form a line.
And the wind whispers. And the rifles rise drawing a straight line. And the eyes of executers focus on defenceless chests.
Perhaps none of those who are aiming bears in mind the days of decent and strenuous work upon those men’s shoulders; perhaps they can’t see, beside them, their wives and kids, fathers and mothers, or the tombs where their fathers and mothers are buried in some modest cemetery.
Perhaps they do not discern the eyes that exude, in just one reflexion, confusion, fear, a silent request for compassion or the final decision to die on their feet albeit such death is viciously unfair.
Perhaps the executing soldiers only see in front of them a burden they have to get rid of quickly in order to get back home.
The naked truth is the one of a signal, and then the lethal fire of the rifles. And the humble men who fall to the ground. The men who embrace each other in the solitary common graves. Those men for whom no cross remained, no flower, in the steppe where they were savagely deprived of the hope of walking with dignity along the pathways of life”.
